Your Guide To The Seven Chakras

September 20, 2023 by Ravi Chermala
7 chakras

One of the most foundational philosophies in yoga is knowing how to work with the chakras. If you’ve just started taking yoga classes, you may have heard your teacher talk about them. But what do chakras even mean and what do each of them represent?

Let’s dive into the meaning behind the 7 chakras.

What Are Chakras

The idea of chakras comes from ancient India, dating back to 1500-500 BC, as described in the religious text called The Vedas. In the realm of yoga and spirituality, it’s believed that each person possesses two bodies: the physical body and the “subtle” body, composed of energy. These two bodies coexist, influencing each other.

The chakras are the main energetic points along the subtle body, situated along the spinal column, extending from the base of the spine to the crown of your head. Each chakra is intrinsically connected to different aspects of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Chakras can either be blocked or unblocked depending on your lifestyle. You can unblock them through lifestyle changes, along with meditation and yoga.

Meanings of the 7 chakras

1. Root chakra

The root chakra represents stability. It is the foundation, associated with our sense of security and grounding. When the root chakra is balanced, it empowers us to overcome challenges with resilience.

2. Sacral chakra

Color: Orange

The sacral chakra governs sexuality, pleasure, and creativity. It encourages us to embrace our passions and desires. A balanced sacral chakra enhances our ability to experience joy and explore our creative potential.

3. Solar plexus chakra

Color: Yellow

Location: Upper abdomen

The solar plexus chakra is linked to confidence and self-esteem. It empowers us to embrace our inner strength and assertiveness. When balanced, it fosters a strong sense of self-worth.

4. Heart chakra

Color: Green

Location: Center of the chest

The heart chakra is all about love and compassion. It influences our ability to give and receive love, fostering empathy and kindness towards ourselves and others.

5. Throat chakra

Color: Blue

Location: Throat

The throat chakra governs communication and expression. It enables us to articulate our thoughts and feelings clearly and authentically. A balanced throat chakra facilitates effective communication.

6. Third eye chakra

Color: Indigo

Location: Between the eyebrows

The third eye chakra is associated with intuition, trust, and imagination. It deepens our insight and spiritual awareness, guiding us towards greater wisdom.

7. Crown chakra

Color: Violet

Location: Top of the head

The crown chakra represents intelligence, awareness, and consciousness. It connects us to the divine and the universal energy, fostering a sense of unity and enlightenment.
