How To Set Intentions For The New Year

December 27, 2023 by Ravi Chermala
how to set intentions for the new year

As a new year approaches, many of us think about setting new year resolutions or goals. However, setting intentions for the new year can be a more mindful and fulfilling approach.

Unlike a resolution or goal, which is a specific target, an intention is more about the journey. It’s a guiding principle or a mindset that helps shape your actions and attitudes.

As a yoga instructor, I’ve seen how being mindful can positively influence your life. Here are five tips on how to set intentions for the new year.

Reflect on the Past Year

Take time to reflect on the past year. What brought you joy? What lessons did you learn? This reflection can help inform the intentions you set for the upcoming year.

Remember, these aren’t about correcting flaws but about growth and alignment with your values.

Choose a Theme or Short Phrase

Instead of a long list of goals, consider a theme or a short phrase that encapsulates your intention. This could be something like “embrace simplicity,” “cultivate kindness,” or “live authentically.” Let this theme guide your daily actions and decisions.

Incorporate Your Intention into Daily Life

Setting an intention is just the beginning. Find ways to weave it into your daily life. This could be through meditation, journaling, or simply pausing throughout the day to remind yourself of your vision.

Be Flexible and Patient

Unlike goal setting, intentions are flexible. They allow room for growth and change. Be patient with yourself as you navigate the year, and be open to where the journey may lead you.

Celebrate Small Achievements

Acknowledge and celebrate moments where your intention has guided you. Whether it’s making a decision that aligns with your vision or noticing a shift in your mindset, these small victories are significant.
